Day 27 - Rom 4:5 Because I’m justified, I am assured even in dryness

"But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." - Romans 4:5 (KJV)
In Romans 4:5, we find a powerful message of comfort for believers who may be accused of being "lazy" or who are experiencing seasons of pruning or seeming dryness. The verse states, "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." This emphasizes the fact that it is not our works or efforts that secure our righteousness, but our faith in God who justifies even the ungodly.
Abraham and David are presented as examples in Romans 4, so that we can find assurance in the knowledge that our standing before God is based on faith, not on our performance or productivity.
Abraham and David, both revered figures in the Bible, were justified by their faith, not by their works. Their lives were marked by moments of weakness and failure, yet God counted their faith as righteousness. This should bring great comfort to believers who may feel inadequate or unproductive in their spiritual lives. Even during seasons of pruning or dryness, we can rest in the knowledge that our faith in God's grace and mercy is what truly matters. As we trust in Him, we can be confident that we are blessed and secure in our relationship with God, not because of our own efforts, but because of His unchanging love and faithfulness.

  • "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost." - Titus 3:5
  • "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." - Galatians 2:16
  • "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." - Romans 11:6

Prayer / Confession

Dear God, I thank you for the message of Romans 4:5 that reminds me that my righteousness comes from my faith in You, not from my own works or productivity. I thank You that it is “to him that works not”. I believe in Him who justifies the ungodly, and my faith is counted as righteousness. Please help me to rest in the knowledge that my standing before You is based on my trust in Your grace and mercy, not on my own efforts.
Thank you that even when I feel dry, inadequate or unproductive in my spiritual life, I know that You see faith the faith and the Spirit that abides in me. I can rejoice in You and Your salvation, even when there seems to be no fruit. You are the joy of my salvation.
Thank you for Your unchanging love and faithfulness, and for the assurance that I have in You. I pray that You will continue to strengthen my faith and help me to trust in You in all seasons.
